What is Freight Forwarding?

Overview

Freight Forwarding is a service engaged in the agency field that takes care of the delivery and receipt of Export and Import goods thoroughly and completely. So it’s not just a shipping agent, so the shipping services offered by Freight Forwarder companies are much more complete and more varied.

The delivery of goods can be carried out via land, sea and air transportation routes either with the company’s own fleet or without the need to have its own fleet or transportation facilities and infrastructure by cooperating with the same service company or what is commonly called a third party / vendor.

Meanwhile, the delivery of goods can be done in the following ways:

  1. Based on the address, the goods can be shipped DD (Door to Door) or DP (Door to Port) or PD (Port to Door) or PP (Port to Port).
  2. Based on the delivery system, the choice can be:
    • LCL or Less Container Loaded is a system of shipping goods whose capacity is below the standard container loading capacity. So that the goods will be calculated cubically and collected with various other shipments until the container is fully loaded and then sent.
    • FCL or Full Container Loaded is a system of shipping goods carried out in a special full container.
  3. Based on the type of container, it can be as follows:
    • Dry Container or standard container is a type of dry or standard container that is used to ship general goods that are not dangerous, not in the form of gas or liquid.
    • Reefer Container is a type of container that is equipped with temperature control, for shipping fresh food for example.
    • Open Top Container is a type of container with an open top, for shipping goods with a height that exceeds the standard Dry Container.
    • Flat Rack Container is a type of flat container that is open on all parts, for shipping goods with a width that exceeds the standard Dry Container.
